Get the crew out of the group chat and into the bar. Whether you’re celebrating with coworkers, bringing friends together before everyone heads out of town, or saving the party for January, The Octopus Bar has room for your kind of night.
We’re a Wallingford neighborhood landmark with craft cocktails, food from The Salty Shack, and plenty of character. You can reserve a home base while the bar stays open to everyone—or take over the whole damn ship.
Start with one question: do you want space for your group, or the whole place to yourselves?
A Free Group Reservation: Your Crew, Your Home Base
For groups of 10 or more, our free large-party reservations give everyone a place to gather without committing to a venue buyout. There’s no reservation fee or food-and-beverage minimum. We’ll confirm the space and setup for your date, with reserved space and signage for your group.
The bar remains open to the public. Guests can order their own food and drinks, or you can arrange a hosted tab. It works for a team get-together, a holiday reunion with friends, or a celebration that can become a night out.
Share any area preference when you inquire. We’ll confirm what’s possible for your headcount and the evening’s plans. A group reservation doesn’t automatically include a dedicated server.
A Full Buyout: The Bar Is Yours
If you want an exclusively private holiday party, a full buyout gives your group five hours with the venue to yourselves. Food from The Salty Shack and drinks count toward your food-and-beverage minimum.
For October 2026 through January 2027, minimums start at $4,500 Sunday–Thursday and $8,500 Friday–Saturday for groups of up to 50. Larger groups have higher minimums. A 22% service charge and applicable sales tax are additional; the service charge goes entirely to employees working the event. Each additional hour raises the food-and-beverage minimum by $500.
The minimum is your spending commitment. If purchases fall short, the remaining difference is still due; purchases above it are additional. See the current headcount tiers and booking details on our Groups & Parties page:

Private events can accommodate up to 200 guests depending on the date and setup. Groups above 150 need additional planning. Tell us how you picture the room working, especially if you need seating for a presentation or a particular arrangement.
Feed The Crew
The Salty Shack’s in-house party menu includes hot pans, sandwiches and wraps for sharing. Choose the food around your headcount and how hungry you expect everyone to be, and we’ll work out quantities and service timing with you.
For a free group reservation, guests can also order from the regular menu. We keep the full menu available for guests with dietary needs; tell us what your group needs so we can discuss suitable choices.
Our catering menu and event guide are linked from the Groups & Parties page. They give you something concrete to compare before deciding how you want to celebrate.
Make The Night Yours
Full buyouts include use of the microphone, projector/TV, music connection and stage. Bring the year-end toast, the slideshow or the playlist.
Karaoke, a DJ or a band can be booked separately. We have approved karaoke and DJ vendors and are happy to discuss other vendors in advance. Entertainment is booked and priced separately.
The bar is 21+, and the space is ADA accessible. Let us know about access needs and any equipment connections while we plan the event.
December Or January? Both Count
Your celebration doesn’t have to happen before everyone leaves town. Our seasonal buyout offer runs through January 2027, so you can bring the team together after the holiday rush too.
If your dates are flexible, include a couple of options. Sunday–Thursday buyout minimums are lower than Friday–Saturday minimums. We’ll confirm availability directly; an inquiry doesn’t reserve the date.
Tell Us What You’Re Planning
Send your preferred date, start time, estimated headcount and whether you want a free group reservation or a full buyout. If you have a total budget, tell us that too—including service charge and tax—so we can talk about an option that fits.
Not sure which way to go? Select “Not sure yet” on the inquiry form. We’ll reply personally and help you work out the details.
